Cleaning cutlery before Thanksgiving might be more important than you realize! Consider this: have you ever sat down to a meal at a restaurant or as a guest, and your cutlery wasn’t clean and shiny? It doesn’t have to be dirty, food-stained, or rusty; just looking dull will make it unappealing, affecting the food. Food doesn’t taste as good when you attempt to eat it with less-than-satisfactory cutlery. But what if it’s not dirt? What if it’s scratched, stained, or rust-spotted? Is there anything that can be done? Yes, there is.
Cleaning Cutlery Before Thanksgiving with BKF
Removing stains, scratches, and rust from your cutlery is easier than you might think. First, wet the cutlery, then sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser on your knives, forks, and spoons while wet. Next, use a soft sponge or cloth to scrub the cutlery gently. Bar Keepers Friend contains oxalic acid (found in rhubarb and other organics), which helps to remove stains and discoloration. When you are done cleaning, simply rinse your cutlery. Don’t set it aside to dry; it’s essential to dry the cutlery immediately with a paper towel or microfiber cloth to prevent water spots or stains from forming. Repeat as necessary. Here’s more: How to Remove Rust.
Pro Tip: Always follow the Bar Keepers Friend product packaging instructions for specific guidelines and safety precautions. Additionally, testing the product on a small, inconspicuous cutlery area is a good idea first to ensure compatibility.
What about Stainless Steel Cutlery?
You can use the original powder or Bar Keepers Friend Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish. Like the powder, this product contains no harsh abrasives. It’s been specially formulated to clean stainless steel and will not scratch or dull stainless steel surfaces. A plus for this product is that the spray nozzle makes it easy to clean, polish, and shine stainless steel; just spray it on and wipe it off—it’s as easy as that!
Although many of our fans have used BKF on silver (sterling silver is OK), we advise against it.
Here’s What Retailer Knifewear Had to Say
“Let’s say you’re about to make yourself a nice dinner, and you reach over to grab your favorite carbon steel knife only to discover that it has been stored improperly and is now rusty! No need to panic or wreck friendships over this; we have you covered. What if I told you there was a cleaner from the late 1800s, in powder form, commonly used to clean steel sinks, that would make this rusty mess go away like magic? You’d probably say, “no way” or “that’s too good to be true”, but such a product does exist, and we are proud to add it to our lineup. Everyone, please give a warm welcome to Bar Keepers Friend.” — Knifewear.com
