How to Clean a Glass Cooktop

September 12, 2021

Even if you clean your stovetop after every use, it’s easy to overlook spills that fall through your stove’s metal grates – and as you know, not all cleansers are created equal. If you’re wiping down your stovetop with a cleanser that isn’t breaking down grease and grime, it can build up over time – leaving your stovetop with caked-on splatter and drippings. Although incredibly important, you’ll find (with our tips), the process isn’t difficult at all. Here’s how to clean a stovetop with Bar Keepers Friend.

How to Clean a Stovetop

Step #1. Remove Your Burner Covers & Range Knobs

The first step in deep-cleaning your stovetop is to remove the burner covers and range knobs. Not only will you have an easier time cleaning the surface of the actual stovetop, but you’ll also have the opportunity to deep-clean the removed accessories. Once removed, bring the burner covers and range knobs to the sink to be thoroughly cleaned.

Step #2: Clean Burner Covers & Range Knobs

After placing your burner covers and range knobs into the sink, generously sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend powder cleanser onto their surface. Using water and a sponge, scrub your burner covers and range knobs and rinse thoroughly. For more heavily soiled covers and knobs, use our powder cleanser and water to create a paste, and let it sit for no more than 2-3 minutes. Once around 2-3 minutes has passed, scrub vigorously and rinse.

If the grime on your burners and knobs is particularly stubborn, we also recommend using our Cookware Cleanser & Polish; which has additional surfactants that help break down and removed grease. Follow the same previous steps with our cookware cleanser.

Upon rinsing off BKF, please burner covers and knobs on a clean towel to air dry. Now it’s time to move onto the actual stove.

Step #3: Clean Your Stovetop

With your burner covers and range knobs cleaned and sitting on a clean towel to dry, it’s officially time to clean your stove. Sprinkle BKF powder cleanser or cookware cleaner onto the surface of your stove, and create a paste using. For a stronger consistency, add more product (and less water) to the mixture. Just like with the burner covers and knobs, you’ll want to only let the paste sit for 2-3 minutes. Once 2-3 minutes have passed (or you’re comfortable removing), use a wet sponge to wipe away the product and residue. Rinse out the sponge and repeat until all residue is gone.
Use a hand towel or paper towel to dry the freshly cleaned surface.

Step #4: Place Clean Burners & Knobs Back on Stove

Once you have cleaned your stovetop, and your burners and knobs are dry, it’s time to put everything back together. Place the burners back on the stovetop and the knobs in the proper control area. Now, step back and appreciate the results of your efforts!

To keep your stovetop looking its best, make cleaning it thoroughly after every meal a priority. A few dedicated minutes cleaning with Bar Keepers Friend’s MORE Spray + Foam after dinner can save you a lot of time in the future.
