Cleaning Dirty Floor Mats with Bar Keepers Friend

May 10, 2023

Cleaning dirty floor mats can be a challenge. I can’t think of many more things that come in contact with more dirt, grime, germs, muck, road salt, and sticky stuff than vehicle floor mats, can you? When my children were young, I remember transporting an ill child to grandma’s. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the grandparents before the child got sick. The good news is most of it ended up on the floor mat. The bad news is I had to clean it up. I think she had oatmeal for breakfast that morning.

Cleaning Dirty Floor Mats with Bar Keepers Friend

Last week my good friend Chris sent me a text with a photo of the mats of his truck on the driveway as he was cleaning them. In the foreground was a bottle of Bar Keeps Friend Soft Cleanser. In the text, he said, “Hey, I’m trying that stuff you always talk about, Bar Keepers Friend.” I texted back, saying, “Let me know how it works.” He texted back with a photo of the cleaned mats saying, “These mats haven’t looked this good since they were new!”

Keeping Your Floor Mats Clean Protects Your Vehicle

Clean floor mats look good, but it’s more than that. Moisture, dirt, and road salt caught under mats can cause your floorboards to rust. “Regularly cleaning your car mats is something we recommend you get in the habit of doing. No matter what season it may be. If there is a noticeable mess, you should wash the mats as soon as you can. Otherwise, a monthly cleaning will do. Like we stated in the first tip, if moisture is trapped underneath the mats, this could lead to rusting problems later on!” — Rocket Carwash – 5 Top Tips for Protecting Your Car Mats

Using BKF Soft Cleanser

One of the great things about our Soft Cleanser, besides that it does a terrific job, is that it’s so easy to use. Chris simply took his mats out of the truck, shook them off a bit, hosed them down to get them wet, and then squeezed  soft cleaner on them. Chris used a brush to spread the cleanser all over the mats. Then he scrubbed it in and let the product sit for about a minute. After that, he hosed the mats off and dried them with a soft towel.

Pro Tip: We don’t recommend Soft Cleanser for all surfaces. For example, only use it sparingly on fiberglass, plastic, and aluminum. Before cleaning any surface, including floor mats, test a small out-of-sight spot.

You can use Bar Keepers Friend cleaning products on your method of transportation, whether it’s your bikeboat, or vehicle floor mats. Did you know you can use Bar Keepers Friend products on your tires, dash, and under the hood of your car or truck? How to Clean Your Car with Bar Keepers Friend.
