Bar Keepers Friend Team Talk with Felicia Savage
What is your position and role at BKF?
I’m the Digital Marketing Manager here at Bar Keepers Friend. In my role, I develop marketing strategies that help drive sales of Bar Keepers Friend products. Along with developing viable strategies, I manage the marketing team and delegate projects associated with current sales initiatives.
How long have you been with BKF?
It was actually four years this past Saturday. To say it’s been a wonderful experience would be an understatement. I worked in the tech industry for more than a decade – and while I learned a lot in the field, it was pretty chaotic. That isn’t to say our department isn’t fast-paced (it really is!), but many of the tech companies I’ve worked for (or observed) were generally start-ups looking for their next round of funding. People would come and go so quickly, and it would make your head spin. Some people thrive in that type of environment, but it isn’t for me.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that because BKF is a small, family-owned company that’s been around for years (and is focused on consumer satisfaction), we can take our time and focus on making BKF products the best they can be. This makes developing strategies infinitely easier – because you’re not just trying to appease folks in Silicon Valley. Your goal is to showcase a great product that folks will use for years to come. That’s why I’ve been here for four years… and counting!
Why do you work at BKF? What do you appreciate about BKF’s culture?
The culture at Bar Keepers Friend is unlike any place I’ve ever worked. Sure – most places nowadays will allow you to wear T-shirts and jeans to work, but that doesn’t really make the culture. I’ve worked at places that would let you wear what you wanted, but managers wouldn’t ever listen to what I had to say. I would be given specific tasks that didn’t allow me to utilize my expertise – and any deviation from the plans was immediately met with disdain… even if following the exact plan didn’t give us the results we needed. Not every idea that makes it past our VP of Marketing’s desk is going to be leveraged, but I’ll always be given time to speak.
Here at Bar Keepers Friend, I’m treated like an individual – and more importantly, a friggin’ adult. The same goes for the rest of the team at BKF. So long as you get your work done (and I legitimately don’t care how you get it done) and you’re hitting your metrics, do your thing. If you’ve got a doctor’s appointment, just go. There’s no micro-managing here at BKF. If you’re hired for a specific role, it’s assumed that you’re the expert (or expert-in-training) for that subject matter. Hire the right folks, and you’ll never need to micromanage.
What’s something about BKF that most people don’t know?
Casual BKF fans may not know this, but we have a whole line of amazing products. Bar Keepers Friend is known for its powder and soft cleansers, but we make so much more. We have our MORE Spray, our Coffee Maker products, our Cooktop Cleaner, the list goes on. Our chemists are always in the lab; constantly looking for ways to make consumer lives easier. Whether it’s improving formulas or creating entirely new products (we just launched EZ-Flush), the team is always hard at work. People can use our store locator or go to Amazon to find all the products we make!
How do you use BKF products at home?
BKF Cookware Cleanser & Polish is my absolute favorite. It’s essentially a stronger version of our original powder cleanser; containing about 50% more surfactant. It’s tough on stains and can be used on much more than cookware – like my stainless steel sink. I’ll typically use the Cookware Cleanser for tough stains in my sink (generally before the guests arrive) and Bar Keepers Friend Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish for everyday maintenance.
What are your hobbies and Interests?
When I’m not at work, I’m drawing, watching cartoons or playing video games. I also practice Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!
