Cleaning Christmas Ornaments with BKF

After inheriting several boxes of Christmas ornaments from my mother-in-law several years ago, my wife and I learned that cleaning Christmas ornaments can be daunting. Many of the ornaments were antiques that had been passed down for generations. There were glass bulbs, porcelain Santa’s, and brass candle holders.  Our primary goal was that we didn’t want to damage these heirlooms. Unfortunately, we did.

This was before Bar Keepers Friend offered MORE Spray + Foam Cleaner, and we didn’t consider using the original powder for fear of damaging them. However, some of the cleaners we tried had harsh abrasives and left a few spots on some. Also, I dropped one… so there’s that.

Cleaning Ornaments

If your ornaments are new (or new-ish), you may need only wipe them off with a dry microfiber cloth. If you have older ones, you’ll need to do more.

First, inspect the bulbs for damage. Are there cracks, damaged paint, or missing applications such as glitter? After a thorough inspection, it’s time to clean your ornaments.

Using More Spray + Foam on Your Ornaments

You can safely use MORE Spray + Foam on glass, porcelain, ceramic, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper alloys, and aluminum ornaments.

• Twist the trigger spray nozzle to on
• Open nozzle flap to foam option
• Spray it on the ornament
• Gently rub the ornament with a soft cloth
• Let it sit for one minute
• Rinse
• Wipe the ornament dry with a microfiber

One last thing: Keep a good grip on the bulbs while you clean them. It’s a good idea to put a soft towel under them so if you drop an ornament, you don’t break one like I did.

Important:  Before cleaning fiberglass, plastic, anodized aluminum, or brushed metal ornaments, test first on a small spot.

My favorite thing about MORE Spray + Foam is that it clings to horizontal surfaces when set on Foam. So, it covers spherical ornaments without dripping off! I can spray it on and wipe it off without gravity whooshing it away. The most important thing is that it cleans the ornaments without damaging them. It has the same cleaning ingredients as the powder but without micro-abrasives, making it a safe cleaner for many surfaces, not just Christmas ornaments.
